Education and Visitor Manager

Hours / contract:  Part-Time

Salary:  £14K per annum (based on 3 days per week/22.5hrs)

Hexham Abbey is looking for someone to take ownership of our education outreach and overall visitor experience - including schools visits, organised groups, tourists and pilgrims.

Role responsibilities will include;

  • Lead on the overall Abbey visitor experience
  • Organise and take the lead on school visits, working with our education team volunteers to plan and execute positive experiences for all students and teachers.
  • Coordinate group visits from tourism operators, blue badge guides etc
  • Maintain and develop the main Abbey welcome desk
  • Manage and maintain the visitor and exhibition centre
  • Optimise visitor donations and work to increase income from individual visitors and visiting groups
  • Promote visiting the Abbey as a pilgrimage destination
  • Lead on low threshold engagement community events, promoting the Christian heritage of the Abbey and Christian faith

We are open to applicants from varied backgrounds and would be looking for possible skills and experience in any of the following areas:

  • Teaching and/or children and youth work
  • Visitor management
  • Community engagement
  • Marketing and promotion
  • Working in a heritage setting, in particular Christian heritage

Note: In accordance with the equality act 2010 it is a genuine occupational requirement that the post holder is a Christian and we would expect the post holder to adhere to our values as a church. The post demands enhanced DBS clearance.

Fundraising Manager

Hours / contract:  Full-Time or Part-Time – 18-month Contract (with the possibility of going to permanent)

Salary:  £28K per annum

Location:  Hexham (homeworking is possible)

At Hexham Abbey we have ambitious plans to drive fundraising income over the coming years and as a result, we have created an exciting new role of Fundraising Manager. The Fundraising Manager will develop and implement a strategy of fundraising programmes and events which over 18 months will deliver significant income for the organisation. 

This role will be pivotal to continued growth and will give the successful candidate an opportunity to make the role their own, developing and leading on fundraising strategies particularly in relation to major projects and major donors. The Fundraising Manager will take sole responsibility for developing a major donor pipeline as well as taking oversight of all day to day fundraising and regular donation activities.

Duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Meet ambitious 6 figure income targets and achieve significant growth
  • Create a new fundraising strategy for major donors
  • Build and maintain relationships with major donors
  • Develop current fundraising and communications strategies
  • Develop fundraising events and liaise with the events team
  • Take responsibility for the budget and maintain a pipeline

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 2 years' experience in a charity fundraising environment. In addition to;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in writing and delivering persuasive copy for supporters
  • An understanding of fundraising guidelines including GDPR and Gift Aid compliance
  • Experience within the church/heritage sector would be beneficial.
  • The ability to build internal and external relationships with key stakeholders and the ability to work under pressure.

Catering Manager / Executive Chef

Hours / contract:  Full-Time or Part-Time considered (it is not expected that the role can be done with less than 3.5 days per week)

Salary:  Up to FTE £24K per annum depending on experience - with an additional bonus potential of 3-4k per annum

Hexham Abbey requires a Catering Manager to run its growing F&B operations.  The role will focus on event catering for functions (including weddings, parties and visiting groups) and developing our Refectory Cafe with the launch of a fixed evening offer, plus general oversight of the Cafe to synchronise operations with the wider catering activity of the site.

The role is very hands on, the successful candidate will be a qualified chef, fully able to cook high quality produce on their own when required, and to work in the Refectory Cafe to cover other back of house staff as required.  This is not a desk job!

To be considered for this role you MUST;

- Be an experienced/qualified chef, able to work on your own and in a lead chef role supervising other staff as required.

- Be able to plan, cost and source for new menu development, reacting to customer needs and requests

- Have staff management experience both on defined and regular operations (cafe) and event catering (bespoke)

- Have high standards of cleanliness, and experience of managing set up and take down for both daily cafe/restaurant operations, and event catering

- Be highly organised, able to utilise IT and applicable software/IT systems, in order to run an efficient business operation

We are always looking for Volunteers who would like to help out here at Hexham Abbey.  This could be guiding and stewarding visiting groups, for those with an interest in history who enjoy helping and interacting with people.  Our Gift Shop and Cafe are also partially staffed with volunteers who simply enjoy keeping busy and giving people a warm welcome as they visit our site.
