See also HEXAB2103 Three lancet windows have been executed by Messrs John Hardman and Co, of London and Birmingham, and erected in the north transept of this church to the memory of the Fairless family. They contain figures of Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin, St Peter, St Paul, St Anne, and St Mary Magdalen. The windows are in the style of the glass at Santa Croce, at Florence. [Building News 27 Feb 1880 Vol.38 p.266] 1996: Protected with 6 mm polycarbonate by B & R Glazing Co Ltd in June 1996 [Faculty reg. no.4, Faculty no.4762, granted 26 Jan 1996] 2011/2012: All the polycarbonate protection was removed and wire guards fitted by H&R Developments, Caulkerbush, Dumfries in Oct–Nov 2011 and Jan 2012. [Inscription at Cemetery 30/24: see URL] From burial register: 1543; Fairless, Joseph; Gentleman; 84; Hexham; 18 Apr 1873; H.C.Barker; C520. “Joseph Fairless (1789–1873): a painter and decorator, a guardian of the town's poor house, governor of Hexham Grammar School, etc. His real claim to fame was as a numismatist; he played a major rôle in dating and deciphering the inscriptions on the 8,000 Saxon stycas, copper coins that were the currency of 9th-century Northumbria, found by a gravedigger in 1832.” [Every headstone has a story to tell HEXAB9471.1] |
