Great North Window – Bentham and Eleanor Hall Memorial Window
stained-glass | window
glass
Six lancet lights in oak frames. The three lower lancets are devoted to the twelve Apostles; each figure of the saints is represented as bearing something characteristic of his character, history or martyrdom, each in a geometrical shape, the spandrels and spaces between being filled with Early English ornamental work on a ruby ground, and a surrounding border in harmony with the window above. The subjects were chosen by Canon Barker (the Rector).
Memorial Inscriptions: Across the bottom of the lower lights:
✠TO THE GLORY OF GOD✠ | AND IN MEMORY OF BENTHAM HALL | AND ELEANOR ANN HIS WIFE A:D 1873.
Wailes Son & Strang of Newcastle
1872–1873
“While Hexham Abbey Church was being restored, Messrs John and James Hall offered to fill the six long lancet-shaped windows that light the end of the northern transept with stained glass, from designs — appropriate to the building and their purpose — by Messrs Wailes Son & Strang of Newcastle. This was acceded to.” [William Hayward, “James Hall of Tynemouth”, Vol.I, 1896]
Unveiled 1873.
Jan 1971: Repair of upper windows put in hand at a cost of £919 0s 8d [Churchwardens Record HEXAB9535 p21]
It has been reported that the windows were designed by William Bell Scott, based on drawings by Francis Oliphant, but Scott had left Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1864 and moved to London, and Oliphant had left William Wailes in 1847 and died in 1859, 13 years before the windows were commissioned.
