E3: The Good Shepherd;
Cuthbert confirming the young

The right-hand window portrays the figure of Christ as “I am the Good Shepherd[John 10:14]. Below, St Cuthbert, a Bishop of Hexham, is represented as confirming the young people of Northumbria; of whom a biographer writes 1218 years ago: “St Cuthbert used to go round in his Diocese bountifully distributung counsels of salvation, as well as laying his hands on the newly baptized that they might receive the grace of the Holy Spirit.” A thane kneels before the Saint and his followers gather round for the Laying on of Hands. The idea is that of good Shepherding the young by the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese.
The inscription reads: “Exhorted the Brethren | and confirmed them[Acts 15:32].
