E1: The Living Bread;
Etheldreda & Wilfrid with Abbey plans
The central window above the Holy Table [when that was against the east wall] represents the Christ as “I am The Bread of Life” [John 6:35].
Below is represented Queen Etheldreda, the Foundress of the Abbey, inspecting with St Wilfrid the plans of the Abbey she is building at Hexham.
A kneeling page exhibits the plan which the architect is explaining; while, behind, Italian masons are working at the fabric on a scaffolding.
The idea is, the building of the Church leading to Christ as the Living Bread and the Head of the Church.
The inscription reads: “Build ye the Sanctuary | of the LORD GOD” [1 Chr. 22:19].
Unveiled by Mrs G H Bell in memory of George Hogarth Bell; erected by his widow Katharine and his brother Henry.
