Arranged as ‘L’ shape – with 15 stalls on N side of quire facing south and four stalls at west, backing to the organ screen. In front of these three prayer desks with seats in front on north, attached to one to west; & in front of these three prayer desks facing south, the most westerly fixed into west (east-facing) prayer desk. 176.1 – .19 stalls with misericords – descriptions of each follow. 176.20 – .22 prayer desks with seats in front – poppy head ends 176.23 – .26 prayer desks. Each prayer desk merits individual description. All are placed on a platform; fitted to present position as part of the Edwardian re-ordering of the Chancel. |

Misericord N6 An evil pard head |

An evil pard head – usually described as a lion mask or leopard mask, but these are complete heads – with a protruding tongue from an open mouth, a snub nose, elongated eyes extending to the ears. Pards were bloodthirsty progeny of panthers and lionesses that killed with one bound. There is a similar carving on a roof boss in the south transept [HEXAB362.9]. Similar to N7, N10, N11 [HEXAB176.7, HEXAB176.10, HEXAB176.11] & S15 [HEXAB177.15] Supporters: A pendant rosette. East elbow rest (opposite the aisle): Two acanthus leaves. |
