Circular communion table
communion-table | furniture
oak | veneers on blockboard
brown
Part of new [1992] set for celebration of communion at the crossing; light centre is veneered with kneelers and choir furniture. Top has veneered lighter centre with darker edge. Seems to be made in three parts: circular base set on casters; ‘drum’ support with applied slats (as if a fluted column but not clear?)
Part of crossing set – often stored in N chancel aisle. Designer was architect to the Abbey at the time.
Designed by Abbey architect, Alan Moody of Douglass Wise & Partners

“The Rector [Timothy Withers Green] stated that he had recently visited Beverley Minster as well as other churches and was impressed by a round wooden altar. He was not very happy with the present situation at the crossing and perhaps this idea could be given some thought.” [PCC Min. 28/7/1981 p.89 2.7]
“20 Sept: New Crossing furniture delivered … 28 Feb: New altar, rails, choir stalls, & clergy furniture fully used at services” [Churchwardens Record HEXAB9535 1992 p69 & 1993 p70]
2001: “In the Nave, new and stronger castors were fitted to the altar.” [Churchwardens Record HEXAB9535 p84]
