The Light of the World This stained glass window was rescued when a nearby chapel closed. Created by the Gateshead Glass company and installed in 1894, it is a copy of a famous painting by William Holman Hunt called The Light of the World (1853). The picture illustrates a verse from the Bible: ‘Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you and you with me.’ [The Bible, the book of Revelation] | |||

The church of St Mary, Lowgate was opened on 6th December 1894 and closed 25th May 2003. The stained-glass was originally in a border of plain cathedral glass; a stained-glass roundel [HEXAB9005] was previously installed above it. Obituary of William Briddick (who died aged 59 Sunday 18/06/1899) in Parish Magazine July 1899 p.60. 2005. West window removed from St Mary's on 2nd June by Kymes Studios Ltd, M'bro. 2011. The window was stored in the Rector's room in the Parish Centre until it was installed in the new visitor centre in 2014. The faculty to install it in the Abbey Shop was not implemented. “Sarah, dearly beloved wife of William BRIDDICK, who d. at Low Gate 23 Nov. 1892 aged 51 yrs.
