Matrix of a Brass
matrix | memorial
limestone
Large limestone slab, from which a brass label and four shields have been torn
c15th cent?
A large slab, now under the tower, was formerly in the Chancel. It has had a label and four shields. [Hexham and its Abbey, Hodges, 1889, p.83]
The upper portion of an altar tomb, which once carried a brass plate, is shown on Carter's plan as lying at the West end of the North aisle of the Chancel. It may be a portion of the tomb of the Duke of Somerset, who was killed in the battle of Hexham in 1464, and who is recorded as having been buried in the Abbey Church. … The large matrix of a brass, now in the pavement under the tower, can return to its old position in the Chancel. “It was no doubt moved when the Choir was re-laid in 1807.” [Hexham Abbey Record, 674 to 1907, Savage & Hodges, 1907, p.60]
