Evening Prayer on Wednesdays

O God, make speed to save us.

All O Lord, make haste to help us.
That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful,

let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God,
So may your mercy come down upon us to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise
now and for ever

All Amen

An evening hymn is sung or:

Come bless the Lord: all you servants of the Lord

All You that stand by night in the house of the Lord

Lift up your hands toward the sanctuary and bless the Lord
All Come bless the Lord, come bless the Lord

The Psalm

the psalm ends with

All Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen

Psalm 23

1.     The Lord is my shepherd;
Therefore can I lack nothing

2.     He makes me lie down in green pastures;
And leads me beside still waters

3.     He shall refresh my soul;
And guide me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake

4.     Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me

5.     You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me
You have anointed my head with oil, and my cup will be full

6.     Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life,
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever

Psalm 67

1.     God be gracious to us and bless us;
And make his face shine upon us

2.     That your way might be known upon earth
Your saving power among all nations

3.     Let the peoples praise you O God;
Let all the peoples praise you

4.     O let the nations rejoice and be glad,
For you will judge the peoples righteously
And govern the nations upon earth

5.     Let the people praise you, O God,
Let all the peoples praise you

6.     Then shall the earth bring forth its increase
And God, our own God, will bless us

7.     God will bless us
And all the ends of the earth shall fear him

Psalm 121

1.     I lift up my eyes to the hills
From where is my help to come!

2.     My help comes from the Lord
The maker of heaven and earth

3.     He will not suffer your foot to stumble
He who watches over you shall not sleep

4.     Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel
shall neither slumber no sleep

5.     The Lord himself watches over you
the Lord is your shade at your right hand

6.     So that the sun shall not strike you by day
neither the moon by night

7.     The Lord shall keep you from all evil
It is he who shall keep your soul

8.     The Lord shall keep your going out and your coming in
From this time forth for evermore

Psalm 139 v1-11

1.     O Lord, you have searched me out and known me
You know my sitting down and my rising up,
you discern my thoughts from afar

2.     you mark out my journeys and my resting place
And are acquainted with all my ways

3.     For there is not a word on my tongue
But you, lord, know it altogether

4.     You encompass me behind and before
And lay your hand upon me

5.     Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
So high that I cannot endure it

6.     Where can I go then from your spirit?
Or where can I flee from your presence?

7.     If I climb up to heaven you are there
If I make the grave my bed you are there

8.     If I take the wings of the morning
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea

9.     Even there your hand shall lead me
Your right hand shall hold me fast

10.  If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will cover me
And the light around me turn to night

11.  Even darkness is no darkness with you
The night is as clear as the day
Darkness and light to you are both alike

A Scripture Reading

The Magnificat

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.

2 From this day all generations will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.

3 He has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.

4 He has shown strength with his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,

5 Casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.

6 He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.

7 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
to remember his promise of mercy,

8 The promise made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

All Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

…Lord, in your mercy

hear our prayer.

Silence may be kept and silent prayers offered The Collect of the day or the following is said
Eternal Lord,
our beginning and our end:
bring us with the whole creation
to your glory, hidden through past ages and made known
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name your kingdom come, your will be done
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours Now and forever. Amen
