GENERAL HAZARD INFORMATION FOR EDUCATIONAL VISITS TO HEXHAM ABBEY
The following information is provided to assist you with the preparation of your own risk assessment. Hexham Abbey regularly conducts thorough risk assessments of the building but all visiting groups should prepare their own assessments of risk prior to the visit, in accordance with appropriate guidelines.

| Moving vehicles around the vicinity of the Abbey |
- Coaches to arrive on Beaumont Street, adjacent to the Abbey
- Close supervision of children entering/exiting the Abbey and during an outside tour

| Child protection |
- All Abbey staff and volunteers are CRB checked
- Recognition that the Abbey is open to the public during visits
- Children should stay in allocated groups and follow all instructions
- Children accompanied to the toilets by appropriate school/organisation personnel

| Movement around the Abbey |
- Children warned to stay away from two candle stands containing lighted candles unless taking part in an activity
- There are steps around the Abbey some of which are highlighted with white tape
- There are several large stone carvings which are secure but which should not be climbed on

| The Night Stairs |
- There is a long flight of uneven stairs. Children should move up and down the steps in a slow orderly fashion, using the wall as a hand rail if required.
- The children should not lean on or climb the wall at the top of the Night Stairs overlooking the Abbey

| The Crypt |
- The steps are deep and uneven. Adult supervision is necessary. Children should hold the handrail and descend/ascend slowly and carefully

| Access to toilets at the top of the Night Stairs |
- Children go to the toilet with an appropriate adult and move up and down the stairs slowly and with care.

| Activities –
Lighting candles
Using scissors, glue, quills
Dressing Up |
- Close supervision and tying back of hair or loose clothing
- Activity led by trained volunteers. Children made aware of safety issues and to follow instructions
- Adults to check costumes do not trail or pose a trip hazard

Hexham Abbey is an historic parish church which is open to the public. Health and safety policies are in place and we consider a visit to the Abbey a low risk activity. Please remember that the ultimate responsibility for conduct, safety and welfare of your group remains with you.
