A Place of Education

“Your helpers were very nice, helping us to dress up as the fantastic monks and doing the writing with quills and sketches with the pens. The activities were great, thank you.”
(Poppy, aged 9)

The Abbey’s history, cultural heritage and significance for the past, present and future would be meaningless without proper interpretation and the Abbey has
long treasured an ambition to provide more educational support and resources.

Hexham’s story encompasses every age of English history. Even a brief visit evokes a strong connection to the Roman, Saxon and medieval world. Yet to bring these worlds more vividly to life, the Abbey is in desperate need of lecture rooms, audio-visual facilities, display areas and spaces for private study.

The Hexham Abbey Project will include:

  • A state-of-the-art audio-visual theatre.
  • A large adaptable space for 100 people.
  • Space for lectures and seminars.
  • Quiet areas for private study and contemplation.
  • High quality educational resources including information boards, interactive displays, written material and audio-visual equipment.
  • An archive facility.
  • Spaces for church and other community groups to meet.
  • Support facilities for the ‘outreach’ work of our Education Officer.

In an increasingly complex world, education has never been more important.

The Hexham Abbey Project will provide the necessary resources and support to help people learn more about our shared history, culture and heritage.
