SERVING THE FUTURE
Education

The Abbey’s history, cultural heritage and significance for the past, present and future would be meaningless without proper interpretation and the Abbey has long treasured an ambition to provide more educational support and resources.

Hexham’s long history encompasses every age of English history. Even a brief visit evokes a strong connection to the Roman, Saxon and medieval world. Yet to bring these worlds more vividly to life, the Abbey is in desperate need of lecture rooms, audio-visual facilities, display areas and spaces for private study. Be committed to providing life long learning for students of all ages and capabilities.

The Hexham Abbey Centre will include:

  • A state of the art audio- visual theatre, possibly converted from the room currently known as the ‘monastic workshop’.
  • Class room space for lectures and seminars.
  • Quiet areas for private study and contemplation.
  • High quality educational resources including information boards, interactive displays, written material and audio- visual equipment.
  • An archive facility.
  • Support facilities for the ‘outreach’ work of our Education Officer.

In an increasingly complex world, education has never been more important.
The Hexham Abbey Centre will provide the necessary resources and support to help both full time and amateur students learn more about our shared history, culture and heritage.

"RELIGION AND LEARNING HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CLOSELY INTERTWINED AND NOWHERE MORE SO THAN IN NORTHUMBERLAND. THE NEW HEXHAM ABBEY CENTRE WILL ALLOW US TO CONTINUE THIS PROUD TRADITION..."

The Revd Canon Graham Usher, Rector of Hexham
